A population is a group of individuals of the same species
that live in the same area. This picture represents a population because it is of
a population of seal sleeping on the beach. These seals hunt together in the
kelp forest near this beach.
Asexual
reproduction is a type of reproduction that involves one parent and it produces
identical offspring. Mushrooms are an example of this because they reproduce by
the parent producing spores that they release.
A spore is the haploid cell that some organisms release in
order to reproduce. Mold uses spores to reproduce.
Radial symmetry is when an animal can be divided at any
angle and still looks similar. A jellyfish is an example of this because they are
symmetrically rounded.
Adaptation is an organism changing to be better suited to
survive and reproduce. This plan adapted to have thorns on its stems to better protect
itself from animals that wanted to snack on its leafs.
anther and filament of stamen is the pollen sac and the stalk of the stamen. This plant had its anther and filiment hanging down below the flowers petals.
In the background of
this picture you can see the individual fronds of the ferns. Fronds are large leafs with many divisions.
Modified stem of a plant is a special feature developed for
special functions. A burl has developed on this red wood tree to protect the tree from disease.
Lichen is a an algea and a fungus lving in mutualism. This lichen lives on trees.
This leaf contains cellulose which is the stucture for plants cell walls.
Niche is an organism place or function in its community. This Banana slugs niche is on the forest floor.
Ethylene is a gas that effects the coloring of plants. This piece of lettece started turning yellow due to ethylene.
Ambiotic eggs contain special membranes that protect the embryo. these eggs are laid by reptiles, birds and egg laying mammals like a chicked which layed this egg.
Autotrophs self nurish by using photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. This plant uses photosynthesis to receive nutrients.
Heterotrophs need to eat other organisms in order to obtain nutrients. Dogs eat plants and other animals to get there nutrients.
Eukaryotes have cells with a nucleus and organelles that are inclosed by a membrane. Plants have eukaryotic cells making them eukaryotes.
This seed was dispersed by wind. This seed from a tree was blown off by the wind and traveled down to the ground to try and plant a new tree.
Cambium is the layer of tissue between the inner bark and the wood. This tree stump has a cambium.
This wood frog has bilateral symmetry. The markings on his skin are identicle on both sides of him making him symetric.
Meristem is plant tissue that stays embryonic so the plany has indetermined growth. This flower has meristem inside of it.
Hermaphrodites are organisms that function as both males and females. Worms have both female and male sex organs.
C3 plants are plants that form three carbon compounds. Potatoes only form three carbon compounds during the calvin cycle.
R-strategists are species that reproduce early in life in large amounts. Weeds are examples of this because they reproduce in large amounts.
Gymnosperm cone is a seed from a vascular plant that is not enclosed in a chamber. A pine cone is a seed that is not enclosed in a chamber that takes the shape of a cone.
Stigma and style of carpel
The stigma of the plant traps pollen grains while the style is a stalk of the carpel with the stigma at the top and the ovary at the bottom. This plant has a stigma and style.
Succession is when a comunity goes through changes after a catastrophe. This moss grew in the cracks of the stones after it was destoyed when the stones were layed down.
Hydrophobic substances wont mix with water they stay seperate. Oil is hydrophobic and will not mix with water.
Parenchyma cells are unspecialized cells that are responsible for metabolism, storage, and synthesizes. Grass has these type of cells living inside it.
Rhizome is a stem of a plant that is found underground that sends shoots out from its nodes. Ginger is a plant that grows underground with shoots that grow from its nodes.
Semelparity is when adults only have one opportunity to produce a lot of offspring. Brussel Sprouts are semelparity plants and produce seeds once in there life time.
Littoral zone organisms are organisms that live in waters close to the shore. Hermit craps live in the ocean close to the shore.
Pollinators are animals that transfer pollen from one plant to another. Bees transfer pollen from one plant to another when they are gathering nector.
Redox reaction is a chemical reaction where the reactants are oxygen and another element and the other element exchanges electrons with oxygen and the product is reduced. Wood burning invoves fast oxidization and the wood is ruduced to ash.
Hydrophilic means the substance can disolve in a water. When you put sugar in water it disolves making it hydrophilic.
CAM plants are plants that use an adaptation for photosynthesis called crassulacean acid metabolism. Pinapples take in carbon dioxide at night then use it during the day for the calvin cycle making them CAM plants.
Exoskeleton is a hard shell that protects the organsim. Crabs have exoskeltons that protect them.
Phloem is vascular plant tissue with cells arranged into tubes that transport organic nutrients. Cellary is made up of these tissues.
C4 plants have a reaction before the calvin cycle that incorporates CO2 into a four carbon compund. Crap grass undergose this process to turn CO2 into a 4 carbon compound making it a C4 plant.
Sexual dimorphism is the distinction between the secondary sex characteristic between females and males. Humans have differences between males and female making them an example of sexual dimorphism.
Hydrophilic substances disolve in water. Sea salt disolves in water making it hydrophilic.
